Exploring Takayama is like time travelling to olden-day Japan. This small, atmospheric town nestled in the heart of the Japanese Alps is a favourite with domestic and international travellers alike. Wandering along narrow streets lined with Edo period wooden buildings is an utterly enchanting experience.
Behind each noren curtain is a surprise––whether it’s a local craft shop, a heritage museum, or a century-old inn, there’s sure to be something to interest you at every turn. Depending on when you’re visiting, you may be lucky enough to catch the fabulous Takayama Festival, which is held twice a year.
There’s much to explore in this charming rural town. Stroll around the town on foot, or take in the natural beauty of the region by bicycle. Immerse yourself in the local history and culture by visiting the local morning markets, museums, and historical buildings. Consider dropping in at one of the breweries to learn all about one of the region’s local specialities - sake.
As a bonus, fans of Makoto Shinkai’s smash hit animated film Your Name (Kimi No Na Wa) may wish to visit Sannogu Hida Shrine. It’s said that Itomori Shrine in the film was based on this Takayama landmark. Indeed, the town of Itomori was inspired by the Hida Takayama area!
