KINOSAKI ONSEN

Kinosaki Onsen

Kinosaki Onsen is a hot spring lover’s dream come true-–this picturesque town is built entirely  around hot spring baths! With seven public ‘soto-yu’ baths to choose from, you could spend an entire day or two soaking in the waters until you’re squeaky clean, totally relaxed, and as wrinkled as a prune. Best of all, Kinosaki Onsen still retains its old-fashioned charm, with traditional buildings and a canal running through the centre of town. It’s the perfect weekend retreat when you’re looking to  escape the stresses of urban living.

What else can you do besides soak in hot spring baths? Kinosaki has plenty to offer. For starters,  you could pay tribute to the founder of this onsen at Onsenji Temple. This Buddhist saint reputedly prayed for 1,000 days to bring forth spring water to Kinosaki! Ride the ropeway up to  the mountain summit to drop by the temple and get a fabulous view of the surrounding area.  More active folk might like to hike or cycle, while arty types could try a craft workshop or check out the local art centre, which hosts a rotating lineup of international and domestic artists.

Lastly, don’t forget to feast on local specialities. If you’re going to pamper yourself, you may as  well do it inside and out. It’s a good thing Kinosaki’s gourmet delicacies just happen to be ultra-luxe Tajima beef and steamed crab!
