MIYAJIMA

No visit to Hiroshima is complete without spending some time on Miyajima Island. Located about an hour from the city by a combination of train or tram and ferry, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is most famous for Itsukushima Shrine, whose striking vermillion torii gate can be seen from the mainland and on the ferry to the island. It is especially stunning when the tide is high and the gate appears to be floating in the sea!
The shrine is over 1,400 years old but its present form was established in 1168 under the patronage of Taira-no-Kiyomori, who established the first samurai government of Japan. The Taira Clan’s fierce and bloody feud with the Minamoto Clan is related in the epic Tale of the Heike. Finally victorious, the Minamoto established the shogunate at Kamakura in 1192.
There’s plenty to see and do on Miyajima. Visit the shrine and several temples, hike up the mountain, feast on grilled oysters and soft serve ice cream, and more. Of course, you’ll meet many endearing local deer on the island along the way. You’re not supposed to feed them––if you’re not careful, they might even eat your paper maps!
