Hokkaido

With a total of 6 National Parks, 5 Quasi-national Parks, and 12 Prefectural Nature Parks, Hokkaido is the go-to destination for visitors who love unspoiled nature and the great outdoors. Certain species of Japanese wildlife are, in fact, only found here. Nature enthusiasts will be amazed by the sheer vastness and beauty of the natural landscape, and will be held in thrall by the variety of wildlife populating the landscape. These include, but are not limited to, Steller’s sea eagles, Blakiston’s fish owls, whales, dolphins, bears, Ezo deer, Japanese dwarf squirrels, red squirrels, red foxes, and Japanese red-crowned cranes, which were brought back from the brink of extinction in the 1940s.

Because of its rugged landscape and plethora of mountains, lakes and rivers, Hokkaido offers exciting opportunities for various outdoor activities and adventures year-round. Avid skiers and snowboarders flock to the slopes every winter to enjoy the world famous powder snow, which is fondly referred to by local enthusiasts as ‘Japow’. The Sapporo Snow Festival is a huge draw for both domestic and international travellers every February. You will definitely be impressed by intricately carved, majestic ice sculptures and the creativity of the artists. Sapporo is also the birthplace of the eponymous Sapporo Beer, the oldest brand of beer in Japan! Hokkaido is simply a magical place full of beautiful experiences waiting to be discovered. What are you waiting for?
