FUKUOKA

Fukuoka

Fukuoka is a little like San Francisco of the late 1990s and early 2000s. With sunny weather, canals,  river walks, famously friendly locals, start-up friendly culture, and fantastic food, it’s the kind of  harbour city magazines describe––with no small amount of envy––as “highly liveable.” Even  author Junot Diaz has waxed lyrical about Fukuoka, calling it “the kind of place that inspires  songs.” All this makes the city a wonderful place to spend a few days in.

One of Fukuoka’s highlights must be its yatai. Found mainly along the canals in Nakasu district,  these food stalls are some of the last of their kind in Japan. Many local Japanese will disdain them  as touristy, overpriced places, but slide behind one of the curtains and you’ll find locals and  tourists alike cosied up shoulder to shoulder, becoming fast friends over a plate of fried noodles  topped with a perfect fried egg. That’s the magic of eating at yatai––their ability to bring people  together over delicious meals.

Of course, there’s so much else to see and do in Fukuoka. Ohori Park is as lovely a public park as  you could desire in any city, while Uminonakamichi Park and Nokonoshima are delightful for  flower lovers. Fukuoka has spectacular shopping options in the Tenjin district, and those visiting  in summer will be treated to the glorious spectacle that is Gion Yamakasa. Best of all, you’ll get to chat to the locals––the true heart and soul of Fukuoka.
