Arima Onsen

Bathing in hot springs is a huge and important part of Japanese culture, and visitors to Kobe often make a small detour and stop at Arima Onsen. It is one of Japan’s oldest and finest hot spring  resort towns. Flanked by the majestic Rokko mountains on all sides, Arima Onsen has a history going back over one thousand three hundred years. Many distinguished guests have frequented the town and bathed in the healing waters of Arima Onsen over the centuries, including emperors, courtiers, monks, samurai, and various great minds of the literati. Two types of hot spring water gush from deep below the earth’s surface: kinsen, which is golden-brown in colour, and is said to be good for the skin and muscles, and ginsen, or silver water, which is clear and is said to soothe joints and boost circulation.

Said to have been discovered by the gods of ancient Japanese mythology, the origins and healing properties of the waters of Arima Onsen are steeped in legends and folklore, making it an intriguing and fascinating destination to explore.

The town’s small size makes it convenient for covering on foot, and you will find many quaint, narrow lanes and historical wooden buildings that are ready to be discovered. Wander into the souvenir shops to try local treats and admire the fine handicrafts, spend time in basking in the natural beauty of your surroundings, and enjoy a superb afternoon of fun and amusement with the true virtuosos of hospitality and entertainment––the local geisha.
